Keitaro Ohno, Ph.D., was born in 1968 and was bred in Kagawa Prefecture in Shikoku Island, south-west of Tokyo. After he graduated from Marugame high school, he moved to Tokyo and received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1991 and 1993, respectively. From 1993 to 1999, he was with the Space Development Group, Fujitsu Limited, where he was involved in development of components for several satellites. In 1999, he was transferred to a research division to concentrate on fundamental researches. During this term, from 2001 to 2003, he was sent to Computer Mechanics Laboratory in the University of California at Berkeley as Visiting Industrial Fellow and continued to work on the researches.
In 2004, he started his political career. He joined the Cabinet Secretariat of Japan, appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary for political issues to Yoshinori Ohno, the Minister of State for Defense. He was involved in supporting some issues including 1)revision of the National Defense Program Guideline, 2)realignment of U.S. bases in Japan, and 3)extension of activities of Japan's Self Defense Forces in Iraq. After his 400-day-term, he has been serving as the legislative assistant to him, member of the House of Representatives. From 2006 to 2007, other than the position in the diet, he has been with the Department of Information Physics and Computing of the University of Tokyo, where he earned Ph.D. degree in 2007. In September, 2012, he was elected Chairman of 3rd District Branch of Kagawa Prefecture of LDP and was elected member of the House of Representatives of Japan in December, 2012, at the 46th general election.
He was appointed Parliamentary Vice Minister of Defense (the 3rd Reshuffled Cabinet of the 3rd Abe Administration and the 4th Abe Administration), Deputy Secretary-General of the LDP, and State Minister of Cabinet Office in charge of economic security and disaster management etc (the 1st and 2nd Kishida Administration), in 2017, 2019, and 2021, respectively.
His current interests include foreign and international affairs, state security and defense issues, cyber and space policies, science and technology, monetary policy, SME, industrial structure, social business, promotion of IoT/AI/BD as innovation policy, etc.
